Roof mounted solar arrays (a group of solar panels) are commonly used in both the domestic and commercial markets and that is fine until you have an issue requiring access under the panels.
Solar arrays constructed on the roof of your property may need to be removed to have any works completed on the roof structure, this would include repairs to resolve leaks, new work like the installation of skylights, flu’s & vents, or a completely new roof.
Most roofers and roofing companies will not remove & refit the panels as it requires some expertise, regulation compliance and test equipment of which roofers are not familiar with. It can then be a headache trying to find a solar service supplier that will work with your roofer to structure a joint effort.
We take the pain out of this process, by coordinating with your roofer/roofing company we ensure the panels are removed ahead of the roofing work, then refitted straight after the roof work is completed, ensuring you are without solar generation for the shortest time possible.
The exact process is as follows.
- Find your roofer & arrange the work with them.
- Talk to us and share the roofer or roofing company contact details.
- We liaise with your roofer and agree the details & schedule a joint effort as required.
- A day or two ahead of the planned works we visit your site and remove the PV panels and mountings as required for the roof work to be completed.
- After the panels are removed, we individually check each one for physical condition, functionality & safety. We also re-terminate the cables on each panel if the array is of an age where the connectors may have water ingress (we find that in systems over 5 years old there is a high possibility of an increased risk of insulation resistance errors, usually caused by bad connections).
- Your roofer/roofing company either carries out the necessary work and hands over to us to complete the solar refit or coordinates with us to fit the solar array(s) in conjunction with re-tiling the roof in the latter stages.
- With the array(s) now re-installed to the roof we perform testing to confirm the refitting has been successful.
- The whole PV solution is now recommissioned and is ready to start generating power once more.
Depending on the type of roof and work being carried out the price varies due to the time required to make good. The removal can be completed in around half a day (up to 16 PV panels) regardless of roof type etc. The refitting process can take up to 2 days, slate roofs take longer due to having to cut many angles while installing the anchor points to the rafters. If you have many panels scattered around different roof areas facing different angles and are utilising micro inverters the cost will be slightly higher due to the extra time required, we can advise you what is required at a bespoke level.
Access may also be required be it in the form of static scaffolding or a mobile scaffold tower. Obviously if you are having roof work done already, the access method will already be in place, so there would be no extra costs there.
